Several trails lead into the Grand Canyon - some from the North and South Rims all the way to the Colorado River at the bottom - and hiking below the rims is a popular way to view more of this spectacular and vast gorge. For those wishing to hike independently to the bottom, at least two days and an overnight stay in the bottom should be allowed, in addition to the required backcountry permits. For visitors without the necessary gear or time, shorter day trips require less planning but do demand due caution and adequate water at all times.
